Riverside For Life

Doris Wade, also known as D. Wade, has had an inspiring journey that started in the heart of Harlem as the only daughter among three brothers. From a young age, she understood the value of hard work and perseverance. Her basketball journey began at Milbank in the 1970s, where she was mentored by the older generation, honing her skills. By 12, she was already a national champion with HOT SHOT, a clear sign of her commitment and talent.

At Wadleigh Junior High, she shattered records, averaging 26-30 points per game. Her high school career at Julia Richman High School further solidified her legacy. There, she earned numerous All-American honors and graced sports pages regularly, capturing the attention of the basketball world. Despite multiple college offers, Doris decided to stay in New York City, where she would later succeed as an entrepreneur.

I played basketball for Mr. John Black at Intercession and Riverside Church. We played in numerous basketball tournaments throughout New York City and in Canada.

We had two senior teams because we had so many girls. All the girls were talented. We had an A and B team because you could only have 12 girls on the team. We even had 2 younger girls teams. Everyone liked playing for Mr. Black. He was a great coach and a winner. One thing for sure  your game got better under his leadership. He ran a tight ship and was well respected.

The competition was fierce. Everyone wanted to beat us because we dominated and won the majority of the summer league tournaments. I was able to improve my skills during practice because of the talent we had on both teams.

I was a shaker and baker. I loved dribbling the basketball between my legs and around my back, leaving on the defender on the ground. I was known as a scorer and a shooter. I used to rock the boys in the park playing in Manhattan. While playing for Mr. Black, I met Noodie. She was an assistant coach and mentor to the girls’ team. She always encouraged us to be a good role model and respect others. My basketball game and life skills improved thanks to Mr. Black and Noodie.

I am delighted to be honored at Noodie’s Legends Ball along with fellow Riverside Church team members Faleisha Johnson and Marian “Mo” Moorer. We are Riverside Church family for life…
