In Memoriam | Spirit of a Competitor
Simone began playing basketball at a youthful age. She grew up in Rockaway Beach where she began playing in the park in her neighborhood and soon began playing for the Police Athletic League (PAL). She and her teammates traveled across the boroughs of NY, competing against other PAL teams. Simone’s talent and her love for basketball grew. She took the game seriously and perfected her abilities through many hours of practice. Her game flourished while playing the guard position for Beach Channel High School. She was infamous for her no-look passes and her speed down the court. Her drive to the basket was often unstoppable!
She was selected to play on the Daily News All-star team and the Newsday Classic. She traveled throughout the city in her off seasons, playing in various tournaments. Her talent afforded her a full scholarship to the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. After two years, she transferred to Syracuse University. There she earned the Big East Athlete of the Week, many accolades, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology.
After graduating, Simone began her career with the New York City Department of Probation, where she dedicated 27 years to providing public service. Still having a love for basketball and the welfare of children, she also worked at The Beacon Youth Program, a community-based program where she coached youth basketball and mentored school-aged children.
In November 2012, Simone was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Simone’s sports discipline and competitive fighter spirit were with her throughout her six-year battle. In December 2018, GOD called Simone to glory.
