Original Harlem Hooper

My name is Bernitta Dye. To most of you, I’m known as Bunny or coach Bunny. I was born and raised in Harlem New York. My educational journey started at Annunciation Catholic Elementary School. After graduation, I attended St. Raymond’s High School for girls in the Bronx. College took me to Nebraska where I attended John F. Kennedy College for 3 years, playing J.V. ball there for 2 years on an activity grant. This was two years before Title 9 took effect and opened things up for women in sports. I graduated from John F. Kennedy College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in physical education. I later attended The City College of New York and received my master’s degree in early childhood education. I taught Kindergarten in the daycare system for 32 years and Pre-Kindergarten for 2 years which lead to universal pre-k before retiring.

My accomplishments while playing the game I love include: Sportsmanship trophies, two AAU honorable mentions, and Defensive Player of the Game, last picked in the New York State Midnight League which was held at Riverbank State Park. I played AAU for the New York Chuckles, Rucker Pro Legends, All-Star & three WBL pro tryouts.

I am now a G’ma to two active boys Jackson and Trenton. I also coach in a Woman’s and High School girls’ summer tournament under the Jim Couch Foundation called Uptown Challenge which has been around for 21 years. While there I coached my team to 4 championships.
