A Basketball Journey

Denise Lloyd, a talented basketball player hailing from Bronx, New York, has left an indelible mark on the court throughout her career. Starting at John Peter Zenger P.S. 18 Elementary School, Denise showcased her determination by joining the boy’s basketball team since there was no girls’ team available. Her passion for the sport grew as she attended the exclusive Cathy Rush Basketball Camp, proving her dedication early on. At a young age, Denise tasted victory by winning her first 3-on-3 basketball tournament, setting the stage for her future accomplishments.

Moving on to Clark Junior High School, Denise continued to excel on the basketball court. She earned a spot on the varsity basketball team, displaying her skills and commitment. Her talent did not go unnoticed as she also traveled with an AAU basketball team, gaining valuable experience and exposure to higher-level competition.

In high school, at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Bronx, New York, Denise continued to shine on the varsity basketball team. Additionally, she played AAU basketball with the New York Chuckles, enhancing her abilities and further honing her craft. Denise embarked on exciting journeys alongside the Afro Sisters, competing against the Taiwanese national team and emerging victorious. Balancing her commitments, Denise made the difficult decision to focus exclusively on AAU basketball, unable to participate in both high school basketball and AAU.

Transitioning to Anderson Junior College in Anderson, South Carolina, Denise’s basketball prowess continued to grow. She played for the nationally ranked Anderson Junior College team, showcasing her skills on a larger stage. As a freshman, Denise averaged an impressive 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. Her impact persisted in her sophomore year, maintaining impressive statistics with averages of 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists per game. Her remarkable performances led to her recognition as a JUCO All-American during her time at Anderson Junior College.

Seeking further challenges, Denise enrolled at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. She made an immediate impact, averaging 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists per game during her junior year. Demonstrating her consistency and drive, Denise elevated her game during her senior year, posting averages of 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists per game. Her exceptional performances earned her the distinction of being named an Honorable All-American in both her junior and senior years. Denise’s name remains etched in the record books as she set a still-standing record with 16 assists in a single game, showcasing her exceptional playmaking abilities.

Following her collegiate career, Denise ventured overseas to play for Team Stade Clermont-Ferrand in Clermont-Ferrand, France. In her first year abroad, she demonstrated her scoring prowess by averaging an impressive 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists per game. Even in her second year, Denise continued to make an impact, contributing 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. Although her time with the Georgia Peaches and Atlanta Comets was cut short due to the unfortunate bankruptcy of both leagues, Denise’s talents remained evident.

Denise’s exceptional basketball journey also caught the attention of the WNBA. She received invitations to attend the WNBA camp for the Charlotte Sting and Atlanta Dream, a testament to her skills and potential at the professional level. However, Denise decided not to accept either invitation, choosing her own path.
